They tested a wide variety of pop-up opt-in forms. Here are the summary of the results:

Headline:

There 2 winners here both say exactly what the user is going to “get” when they sign up.

Specifically the highest conversions came from:

  1. 29% increase: Limited Offer: Get the 7 simple tricks I used to become an internet millionaire
  2. 30% increase: Get my 13 money-making secrets guide – Its FREE during reader appreciation

These are significant conversion increase over headlines like “Sign up for my newsletter” or “Download my 7 top business strategies guide”

You may also note the “Urgency” stated in the headlines

Inline Field Labels:

There was a 36% increase in conversions when the field label remained visible in the text box.

Bottom Copy: By removing any type of bottom copy after the submit button, they witnessed a 28% increase!

Auto-Center:

When the user scrolled down the page, and the pop-up stayed in the middle, there was an increase in opt-ins

Close Button:

When there was a “no thanks” or “close” link at the bottom of the opt-in, there was a 19% decrease in conversions, compared to having an ‘x’ or ‘close’ at the top right corner

Clicking a Dimmed Area (outside):

When they removed the option to close the form when the user clicked on background outside of the form, there was an increase in opt-ins by 19%

Re-Popup if Ignored:

When the user ignored the pop-up, and came back again later, there was a 31% increase in conversions, if the pop-up displayed again.
